18th Century Japanned Coffer or Chest

$4,950.00

This a George II/George III Coffer or Chest that retains its original red Japanned surface. The chest features a molded lid typically found in George II/ early George III coffers. The is composed of two drawers over bracket feet with the trunk section positioned over the drawers. The raised japanning depicts a village scene to the front of the chest and a more refined scene to the top panel. We sent the chest to our professional art restoration specialist to have the Japanning professionally refreshed and the result is very faithful to the original surface while retaining the deep rich original patina. The left front bracket foot had lost its lower third, with only the interior block remaining. The bracket foot has been impeccably restored, as shown in the photos. The last three photos show the coffer before restoration.
